Happy New Year!

Image result for 2017

Well 2016 definitely had its ups and downs. We lost plenty of important people, both celebrities and loved ones combined. Just one after another, giving us whiplash. So I for one is very glad its over and hope that 2017 will be a better year.

Now that I have had the baby and I am feeling more like myself again, bring on the books! If you follow me on Goodreads you will see that I put my reading challenge up to 50. I had it at 100 last year but that didn’t happen (stupid pregnancy reading slump).

@nerdigirlbooks on Instagram

As it turns out I have exactly 50 books on my Author’s Bookcase that makes up my TBR Shelf. That is the special bookcase that holds all of the books I have received for review from either the author themselves or their publishers. Of course that is just the physical books, I have about 20 e-books.

I also have 66 Dean Koontz novels that I am going to try to get to this year. I’m going to try and read at least a book a week.

Let’s just see what happens this year.

Also the Novels at Night Bookclub, I am a member of have picked a great Stephen King book this month.

I’ve seen the movie but never read the book. I am very excited about this pick.

Hope you all have a great start to 2017 and check out my Instagram!!

A Heartbroken Start to 2017

Image result for hello january

It is the start of a brand new year but it is a solemn start for me and my family. Last night the heavens got a brand new star. My Grandfather, James Queen, left this Earthly plane in search of his wife, Theresa. Whom we lost 8 months ago. I am happy to say that he passed in his sleep and in no pain. So that makes my heart a lot lighter.

James Queen was the sweetest, kindest, and most generous man I know. All of my memories of him are nothing but magnificent. I was lucky enough to grow up next door from my Grandparents for the first 6 years of my life. Then after I moved to FL and, a few years later when I was 12, I was able to spend every summer with them until I was about 16. Now I am so happy that he got to meet Killian before he passed.

I love my Grandparents very much and I am very happy that they are back together again. I bet they are sitting around their living room eating lunch and watching reruns of The Price is Right ( with Bob Barker not Drew Carey)

I will miss you incredibly Grampie and I will love you forever!

Image result for happy new years eve

Hey everyone I wanted to put up a post on this last day of 2016. Man, what a year! We have lost so many celebrities and others along the way. Most important to me was my own Nana and now it seems my grandfather will be finding her soon. The only really great thing to happen to me this year was the birth of our 3rd child and only boy, Killian. He is such a happy baby and I am so in love with him. He is now 6 weeks old and I can not believe how fast time is flying by. Here is some of his best faces of 2016:

November Wrap-Up

Hey Everyone!!

I didn’t get much reading done this month. I did however have our baby! Which is why I didn’t finish a book lol

I would like to introduce the newest member of the Martin Clan, Killian Raymond James Martin…

He is one of the best things in the world to us and he is perfect in every way.

He was born on November 18th,2016 @7:46pm, weighed 8lbs 6oz, and 20inches long.

I do hope I can get out of the reading slump I’ve been in these last 10 months. If not well now you see what’s taking up all my time!!!

November TBR

Hey guys I am back with my November TBR. I am only going to put 4 books on this list because my little man is due any day. I didn’t want to go crazy with the stack. So I decided to go with a theme that I know I will enjoy reading…ready…

Image result for fairy tale retellings

I love a good fairy tale retelling especially if it is one of my favorite stories. So I went down to my local library and picked up 3 books by the same author because I knew that’s what she writes. Also Bekah Awesomebooknut on Youtube suggested these books in several of her videos especially the first book. If you haven’t seen her videos where have you been. She is one of my favorite booktubers to watch and I believe I have seen every one of them. Bekah is also very sweet and is an awesome mom so I can relate better with her than some of the others. Ok enough fangirling….on to the books.

I received a digital copy of this book through Netgalley and I have already started it. It is a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera. This book does not come out until Jan 10, 2017.

Cruel Beauty (Cruel Beauty Universe, #1)

Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

I loved Graceling and Beauty and the Beast is my all time favorite fairy tale. I started reading this book as soon as I got back in my car from the library. This is the first book in the Cruel Beauty Universe.

Crimson Bound

Inspired by the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound is an exhilarating tale of darkness, love, and redemption.

I am absolutely in love with this cover!!

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire (Untitled, #1)

This is the one that captured my eye at the library. Omgosh these covers!!! I didn’t want to read the synopsis of this one but on the back all I saw was the name Juliet and I had to get it because it is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet!!!!

I hope you enjoyed my little TBR pile for the month. I know when the baby gets here I am not going to want to do anything but snuggle him.

Don’t forget to check out Bekah’s YouTube page and also her blog. Links down below!!!

Hey guys! I want to show you guys this amazing new cover from a dear friend of mine. This is the second book to her series. There are no words to express how beautiful this book is. Just look…..

I mean come on!!! I love the light on the water and the snake skin on the spine!!!

Here is the synopsis:

For Zara Moss life was an escape.

But breaking an ancient Aztec tradition and denying the Underworld god, Mictlan, the very life he is owed is forbidden . . . and punishment will be two-fold.

With no rules left to follow, and the Celestial gods unquestioning Mictlan’s ability to conjure history’s worst human massacre, Executioners find a way to deliver the key to his success—Zara—to Mictlan. The Castillo family has saved Zara once but this time she must save herself beyond the neon shore.

As she faces her undead future she discovers that her guard, Tototl, is doing something Mictlan wouldn’t approve of. And that she, too, has the choice to choose her own fate—should she be brave enough to follow.

Yet, in the midst of the bloody games of Tlatchi, a ghastly menagerie, and deadly layers of the Underworld, true friendship thrives with the most unlikely pair of friends.

It’s November!

Image result for happy november

I can not believe that its already November. What happened to October, it’s like I blinked and it was over.

I did start some of my TBR reads but did not finish any of them. There seems to be a pattern to this reading slump. I can start a book but then put it down and not pick up again. I am hoping once the baby comes and things get situated I can get back into my reading groove. Any Tips?

Speaking of pregnancy I am now in my 39th week. Almost done! There is little progress and the contractions are getting stronger just not consistent. We have almost everything we need to welcome Killian home. I can not wait to hold him and snuggle with him. Thats all I want to do for the first week. Just lay around and snuggle him. Anyways, I will post a baby update when he actually gets here. I am very excited but terrified. You wouldn’t think so due to him being my 3rd but its been 8 years lol.

I hope your November is filled with love, laughter, reading, family, and of course food. Lots of Thanksgiving food!!! Been dreaming of that all year.

I’m 13 years old and I changed the world~ Book Review

Mom still won’t let me cut my hair. I still share a bedroom with Grandpa. And my cell phone is still stuck in the Stone Age.

But I’ve got a serious problem now. Big Mike has cancer, and I’ve got to step in and do what science hasn’t yet done. I’ve got to find a cure.

That’s right–I’m 13 years old, and I’m about to change the world.

My Thoughts

I received this book for an honest review from the author. This is D.K. Brantley’s second book and I was honored he asked me again to review his work.

This book follows Adam helping Big Mike through his cancer treatments. From the first book to the second these characters have grown so much. Now dealing with this more grownup situation I liked how they were both mature about the whole thing. I also liked how the students in the school were able to rally together to help also.

It is a short book and I was able to read it all in one sitting but it did pull on some heart strings. I couldn’t imagine having a child of mine go through something like this.

I was also asked to tell you about a boy that the author knows that is facing this terrible disease right now. His name is Dylan Duncan and he is a 7th grader in Cleveland, TN.

Dylan was diagnosed in May of this year with Osteosarcoma. His mother, Becky Duncan, has since taken a leave from work to care for Dylan, which has led to an immediate stop and drastic drop in family income.

Daniel Brantley has decided that now through the end of 2016, all his books proceeds will go to the Duncan family. The book is now available on Amazon for $6.99 or if you would just like to donate to the cause here is the GoFundMe page that you can do so.

Donations for Dylan Duncan

Thank you!

Elementals Book 4 Review

Elementals 4: The Portal to Kerberos by [Madow, Michelle]

Elementals Book 4

The Portal to Kerberos

She will venture into hell to save the one she loves.

After being betrayed by one of their own, Nicole watches helplessly as Blake is snatched into the prison world of Kerberos—along with Medusa’s head, which is the one item they need to stop the Titans from rising again. Now Nicole and the other Elementals must enter the portal, find Blake, and bring him and Medusa’s head back to Earth before the deadly monster Typhon returns and wreaks havoc on the world. But there’s one catch—their elemental powers don’t work in Kerberos. In a dimension designed to make those within it lose touch with reality, and that’s filled with dangerous creatures who want to stop them from completing their task, will they make it out alive?

In this penultimate book of Nicole’s story, join the Elementals as they journey through hell to save the world… before it’s too late.

My Thoughts

I was so excited to be able to continue this adventure with book 4. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time just like the other 3 and then just pitches me off a cliff at the end. Michelle Madow likes to use cliff hangers. AHHH!!!! So now I am a mess drooling for book 5.

I really enjoyed this book for the fact that you get to explore the world of Kerberos. The main characters that are left have to face different  obstacles in order to reach the top of the mountain to save Blake. From Nemean lions guarding the easy way up the mountain, to a forest where you can’t see a thing and can get lost forever in a dense fog, a harsh desert and a river that makes you have the most terrible dreams imaginable.

Ms. Madow has a great way about how to paint the picture of her story and this was no exception. I do enjoy the speed in which the action makes the story move along. I didn’t read it as fast as the others but that was just me. I can not wait to read book 5 and see what happens.
