January Wrap-Up

Hey everyone!! I hope you all had a successful reading month. For me January got me back in touch with my love of reading. I haven’t read in such a long time and I have missed jumping into other worlds.

So I don’t know about you but I read a total of 4 Books!!

tenor

That may not sound like a lot but for a mom of 3 kids, one of which acts like Wreck It Ralph on the daily, that’s pretty good ha ha. So what were these three books that I was able to escape to.

Synopsis

17 year old Ember Denning has made an art of isolating herself. She prefers the dead. She spends her days skipping school in old cemeteries and her nights hiding from her alcoholic father at the funeral home where she works. When her own father dies, Ember learns her whole life is a lie. Standing in the cemetery that’s been her sanctuary, she’s threatened by the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen and rescued by two people who claim to be her family. They say she’s special, that she has a supernatural gift like them…they just don’t know exactly what it is.

They take her to a small Florida town, where Ember’s life takes a turn for the weird. She’s living with her reaper cousins, an orphaned werewolf pack, a faery and a human genius. Ember’s powers are growing stronger, morphing into something bigger than anything anybody anticipated. Ember has questions but nobody has answers. Nobody knows what she is. They only know her mysterious magical gift is trying to kill them and that beautiful dangerous boy from the cemetery may be the only thing standing between her and death.

As Ember’s talents are revealed so are the secrets her father hid and those in power who would seek to destroy her. What’s worse, saving Ember has put her cousins in danger and turned her friend’s lives upside down. Ember must learn to embrace her magic or risk losing the family she’s pieced together.

There’s something wrong with Rose.

From the outside, the Cane family looks like they have it all. A successful military father, a loving mother and five beautiful teenage daughters. But on the inside, life isn’t quite so idyllic: the Cane sisters can barely stand each other, their father is always away and their neglectful mother struggles with addiction and depression.

When their youngest and most beloved sister, Rose, dies in a tragic accident, Mona Cane and her sisters are devastated. And when she is brought back from the dead, they are relieved. But soon they discover that Rose must eat human flesh to survive, and when their mother abandons them, the sisters will find out just how far they’ll go to keep their family together.

Odd Thomas: An Odd Thomas Novel by [Koontz, Dean]

I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 Stars!!

“The dead don’t talk. I don’t know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Sometimes the silent souls who seek out Odd want justice. Occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. But this time it’s different.
A stranger comes to Pico Mundo, accompanied by a horde of hyena-like shades who herald an imminent catastrophe. Aided by his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn, and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, Odd will race against time to thwart the gathering evil. His account of these shattering hours, in which past and present, fate and destiny, converge, is a testament by which to live—an unforgettable fable for our time destined to rank among Dean Koontz’s most enduring works. I will not doing TBR lists anymore. Mostly because I never stick to them, #readerproblems. If you would like to see what I am reading throughout the month please follow me on Instagram or over on Goodreads !!

Mail Drop!

Happy Sunday! I wanted to write up a quick post about some recent BookMail I received yesterday!

OwlHallowPress was gracious enough to send me an ARC of Anna Undreaming by Thomas Welsh.

Expected to be released on March 20th, 2018

Anna is a student surviving the city, and she lives by a simple credo, “Never play their game; their game is always rigged.” For every man she has ever known, it’s a saying that has served her well.

Especially when Anna becomes lost to the dark heart of the city. She finds herself hunted by Dreamers—artists, both good and evil, who construct new worlds—within a complex community that threatens to undermine reality itself. When Anna learns that she’s an Undreamer with powers she cannot yet comprehend, she must travel through their strange and treacherous creations to discover that there’s as much beauty in life as there is darkness. As her existence spirals into wonder and danger, Anna must look deep within herself and face the horrors of her own past, to save her old world as well as her new one.

Then OHP surprised me with a second book. I had no idea they were going to send me this book but I am so happy they did. I can’t wait to read it.

Published November 17th, 2017

Daughter4254 used to think life in a community where art, music and names are outlawed would suffocate her creative spirit. Now that she’s rotting in a prison cell, she’s not sure her dying mother made the right choice when she entrusted her with the secrets of rebellion. Prison has given her plenty of time to relive every mistake and lose all hope.

Then she meets Thomas, a fellow inmate, who tells her stories of the mythical mountain colonies where people have names and the arts thrive. Together they plot an escape, knowing if they fail, they will die. Or worse, their consciousness will be taken by the MindWipe, leaving their bodies free for the government to use. When nothing goes as planned, Daughter4254 must choose between using her mother’s secret to better the world she hates, or following Thomas to the quiet life of freedom she has always craved.

Don’t they both sound great! I am adding them to my TBR list for February! Give both of these awesome authors a follow over on their Instagram accounts and show them some love!

I won an IG giveaway!

I am so flipping excited! My amazing friend, Cassandra Caprio or as some of you may know her as @TheBookishCrypt over on Instagram. She was holding an amazing giveaway over on her account last week and she picked my name!!
I first heard of this book from some Booktubers and when I heard what the books was like, Game of Thrones meets Blade Runner with inspiration of Norse Mythology. Ummmm…..yes please. I have a soft spot for anything that has to do with any type of mythology, Norse, Greek, Egyptian, etc.
For those of you who’s haven’t heard about this novel here is the synopsis:
When the fate of the world is at stake
Loyalties will be tested
As one of Odin’s Valkyries, Malin’s greatest responsibility is to slay immortals and return them to the underworld. But when she unearths a secret that could unravel the balance of all she knows, Malin along with her best friend and her ex-girlfriend must decide where their loyalties lie. And if helping the blue-eyed boy Asher enact his revenge is worth the risk―to the world and her heart.
Thank you so much Cassandra, Macmillan Publishing for sending it to me, and Amanda Hocking for writing this gorgeous book. I can not wait to devour this book and write up my review!

First Bookmail of 2018!

I am so excited to show you all the very first “Book Mail” Book of 2018. The feeling of being able to ask an author or publisher for a review copy of their work has to be one of the most scariest things for a reader. Well besides loaning your book out to someone and not knowing how your book is being treated. I did that ONCE ha ha. I have been out of the reading/reviewing game for little over a year now so I was terrified to ask for a review copy from anyone.

Holding my breath I typed up my request on Instagram for the second book in a series, that I just finished the first book. To my relief the author is a sweetheart and told me that she will send me the second installment!!

So a huge thank you to Martina McAtee for giving me my confidence back! Also to 7 Sisters Publishing for sending me the book and two character trading cards!

Dark Dreams and Dead Things is Book 2 in the Dead Things Series and I can not wait to get started! Perfect book to start my weekend off with! For those of you interested in the synopsis of this second book I will leave a link below. I do not like reading synopsis of the rest of the books in the series because I feel it will spoil it for me!

I am going to go get the kids dinner and then in bed so I can read a chapter or 10!

My Thoughts
I went to the library the other day looking for books from authors I have not heard of and I wanted to find some stand alone as well. I have been reading trilogies and series lately. The Ravenous jumped out at me mostly because of its size but also because it sounded like a zombie book. The cover itself was very haunting with those shadows behind that girl and also the weird skull on the table. After reading the book I now know the significance of the cover.
This book isn’t your typical “zombie” book. No one was bit or some weird virus escaped and turned everyone into flesh eating monsters. It starts with a very broken family that try really hard to seem normal to the outside world. Dad was always away with the army and Mom is clinically depressed, drunk, drugged up, or both and most days left to herself in her room. That leaves the child rearing to the oldest sister, Juliet, who already turned down a scholarship to Juliard to take care of her siblings. When Juliet and her mom get into a fight little Rose paid the price. Now back to the non typical zombie bit, the mom somehow turns her into the undead by a ritual. Now the sisters are left with trying to figure out how to keep Rose from losing her mind and killing everyone of them. So that leaves one thing…..they have to feed Rose.
I liked the way the author talked about the mirrors. Rose wasn’t supposed to look at her own reflection for at least a week because her soul needs to “resettle” back in her body. That is a very cool twist I thought to this genre. They don’t really talk about the persons soul being able to be put back. I mean, you know that person will never be the same again after crossing over. I just never thought about it before and it makes sense for it because it was more of a ritual than disease.
What I didn’t like was the fact that how the mom knew the woman, Harlow, could help Rose. There isn’t any back story on this relationship really. I’m not going to give away the ending but it kinda was anticlimactic a little. Everything seemed to happen really fast and glazed over but I did have fun reading it and I was able to finish it in one sitting. There was even a “OH MAN!” Moment for me lol
So after reading it I will tell you to let those that die, stay dead. It’s never a good idea to raise loved ones from their everlasting resting place, you never know where they were.

Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things Review’

Published August 31,2015

510 pages

I received this book for review back in the beginning of 2016 and I was so excited to read it. Life seemed to have a different plan for me that year and all of my reading stopped. Now that my son is 1 and more independent I am able to get back to another love of mine, reading. Starting my YA year off is Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things by Martina McAtee.

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Ember Denning has made an art of isolating herself. She prefers the dead. She spends her days skipping school in old cemeteries and her nights hiding from her alcoholic father at the funeral home where she works. My Thoughts

That synopsis was what grabbed my attention first! Holy cow doesn’t that sound like an amazing ride and such a colorful mix of different paranormal races! I have to admit one of the reasons I didn’t pick it up was because of the size of the book. It’s a little over 500 pages but once I read the first chapter I knew it was going to fly by. Since I do have kids and business to run it took me longer than I planned to read it, a week to completion. That’s ok though.

.

So let’s chat about what I loved about this first novel. The characters, the setting, and the pace of this book was so engaging and rich. I grew to know all of these different people and I feel like I am already apart of the pack myself. I laughed throughout the book and even cried at the loss of a loved one. The main setting is their town of Belle Haven and it’s a town that is guarded against the outside world. It is run by the supernatural community and I love that. The shops and school are all creatures of this world. So cool!

There is action, suspense, and even romance through out this book. Oh my gosh😍the angst is done so well and kept me turning the pages quickly. There is also a LGBT element to this book and I have yet to read a book with diversity in it. So that was a very pleasant surprise and made it that much more enjoyable because it felt real. The author, in my opinion, wrote those parts well. Like I said before the only thing that was challenging was that it does have over 500 pages. I did fly through it when I got a moment to sit down and read it.

I am so pumped and ready for book 2. Thank you so much Martina for sending me your books and I hope you all enjoyed my review! Head over to her website and take a look around!

Odd Thomas Review

Odd Thomas Series- Book 1

Synopsis

(Amazon.com)

My Thoughts

Dean Koontz has been one of my all time favorite authors since I was about 12 years old. I have been collecting his books ever since. This year I have made it my own challenge to read every single one I own and I have about 67 by my last count. So I decided to start with one of his series, Odd Thomas. There are 10 books in this series including some novellas and 3 graphic novels. I can’t wait to see where this story goes.

“I see dead people. But, then by God, I do something about it.”- Odd Thomas

Odd doesn’t just see the dead but also tries to help them cross over to the other side. He does this by trying to help them finish any unfinished business, like catching the murderer. Now the dead usually find him but he also has a special talent of finding these people by what his girlfriend, Stormy, calls his psychic magnetism. Meaning he just wonders around until he finds the pull of the person he’s looking for. Ok I need to tell you more about why I love this book instead while story.

I love this book mostly because of its characters and I am very attached to them. Odd has a very unique and quirky way he speaks and I have read that some people don’t like it or think that there is no 20 year old that would talk like him. I find him hilarious and have known a few people that do banter back and forth the way he does. I usually end up smiling every time he gets into a conversation with Stormy or the Chief of Police, Two of the most important people in his life. His love for Stormy is one for the ages and as a fortune teller machine told them when they were little:

They whole heartily believe it and as the story goes on so will you! Ah the feels!!

There isn’t much about this book that I did not like. I will say that there is a trigger, well I would think it could be a trigger, of a mass shooting. That is the big terrible bad that Odd is trying to stop when he sees the new stranger in town and all the Bodachs that swarm the town. Oh, Bodachs are the creatures of darkness that feed off the fear and death of a very bad deed. It’s terrible to read about a shooting in a book but to know it happens more than it should in real life too is just tragic. So I’ll add that trigger warning in place.

I do recommend this book and then go and watch the movie. Right now it is on a Netflix and it stars the late Anton Yelchin, may he Rest In Peace. I don’t think that there will be anymore movies for the series because in my opinion Anton was Odd❤️

<<
m giving this first book a 4.5 out of 5 stars! I highly recommend it if you are looking for some paranormal and witty dialog!!

2018 Reading Goals

Can you believe that it’s already 2018!?! I can’t and I also can’t believe that it has been 2 years since I’ve blogged. My heart was very heavy about that and I have missed it a lot. I want to ,ale this year the best year ever and it starts with making my reading goal.

If you haven’t followed me yet over on Goodreads, why not? I would love to be your friend and also follow your reading journey. Here is the link to mine:

https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/41468365-liz-dibenedetto

That’s right! I am going to read 100 books this year. In between my busy life with kids and a business, I will read that many. My determination goes as far as reading instead of binge watching Netflix😱 and I love me some Netflix.

Not only 100 but I would also like to read more books from independent authors or self published authors. I would love to help get their name out there. I know a lot of my favorite stories over the years have been from that pool of writers!

Let me know down in the comments what your reading goals are for this new year and also your Goodreads links❤️

I am Back, Baby!!

That’s right, this very tired book loving momma is going to get back in the saddle this new year! I hope you all had a great 2017❤️

Where have I been? Well I got pregnant back in 2016 and the little darling sucked all of my reading joy out of me and it’s been down hill ever since. I didn’t read a lot this past year due to him, other kids, launching a new business, then having to close said business, to finding a New and Better business😂, and then Christmas. So I read a total of 10 books all year! Go me!

Here’s an updated Little’s picture for you all! They are all growing so fast😱😭

I have missed you all and also reading so so much. This year I want to do things a little differently and I would love to hear your opinions on them.

  • Book Reviews- of course but I am going to also put up reviews from family members that just so happen to read those books with me.
  • Kiddos Corner- my girls are big readers as well. I want them to be educated little humans, soI am going to be having them give me book reports on the books they finish.
  • Color Street- I wanted to share with you all my new business. There is no pressure to buy or to join my team. I just want another outlet for this amazing product. I think you all are going to love. Nothing to spammy either.

Those are some of the things I want to work on this year! Let me know what you think.

Thank you so much for still sticking by my side and I hope you will love my opinions!

As always❤️
